i have never seen this ad before but it portrays such an important message! people these days, girls especially, are so caught up on body image that i feel like they have lost sight of what is truly important.
I think the title of this blog "What's the Skinny" says it all and I like the way so many of the posts try and chip away at the notion that a woman is her body alone or that a woman must be super skinny in order to be desirable. Your blog and Sarah's blog Going Against the Grain make it quite clear that young women are becoming sick and tired of the media's emphasis on women's bodies. The Dove Campaign seems to be picking up on that which is why it must be putting out so many of these commercials (but I still have only seen these commercials on the internet). The commercial about giving young women and girls cameras so they can control their own images of beauty reminds me of the documentary Born Into Brothels which does something similar by giving cameras to the young children living in the brothels so that they can take some control and create their own images rather than having images of their lives created for them. I wonder if part of the solution might not be for all of us sick of media representations to start creating our own media representations and make our own magazines, ads, fashion shows starring a full array of beautiful bodies...
I have only seen these Dove commercials on the internet as well, but I feel that if these were on the television they would have a greater impact. Also, I completely agree with your solution. I believe that by creating our own media representations and magazines, young girls will understand what it truly means to be beautiful, which to me is who a person is, not his or her looks. By creating this it would help to end the stereotypical view of body image that the media has created. It would also show young girls what is important life by not focusing on women's physical appearances.
